Caribbean Restaurants in Boston After Carnival: Where Blue Hill Avenue Eats All Year

The Caribbean Carnival fills Blue Hill Avenue for one Saturday a year. The roti, jerk and oxtail are there the other 364 days, in Mattapan, Dorchester and Hyde Park.

Boston's Caribbean Carnival fills Blue Hill Avenue for one Saturday at the end of summer, but the food that feeds it is there every week. For adults 21+ who came for the parade and want the Caribbean restaurants in Boston the rest of the year, the map runs along the same corridor: Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park, with roti, jerk, oxtail and Jamaican breakfast within a few miles of Franklin Park.

Where Carnival comes from

The first Boston Caribbean Carnival ran in 1973, proposed to Mayor Kevin White by Trinidadian Ken Bonaparte Mitchell and Ivy Ponder, with a parade from City Hall down Tremont Street. In 1976 it moved to Franklin Park, and the route has run through Roxbury and Dorchester since. The modern format is a Saturday in late August: J'ouvert in the early morning on Circuit Drive in Franklin Park, then the main parade forming at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Warren Street in the early afternoon and traveling Warren Street and Blue Hill Avenue to the park. The events hub carries the date once the organizers announce it.

Where Blue Hill Avenue eats the rest of the year

Mattapan — Flames

Flames at 663 Morton Street in Mattapan opens at 7 AM daily and runs until midnight, with Jamaican breakfast until 11 AM. It is the original of a family of Flames locations, which also includes 469 Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester and 746 Huntington Avenue near the Longwood medical area. Jerk chicken and curry chicken are the reasons people go.

Mattapan — Blue Mountain Jamaican Restaurant

Blue Mountain at 1301 Blue Hill Avenue serves breakfast, lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday and closes Mondays. Jerk chicken with rice and plantains is the order Boston Magazine singles out; oxtail, curry, ackee and saltfish, and patties round out the board.

Mattapan — Ali's Roti Restaurant

Ali's Roti at 1188 Blue Hill Avenue is a Trinidadian roti shop: curry chicken, goat, shrimp and boneless fish wrapped in roti skin, plus curry dinners. It keeps daytime hours Monday through Saturday and closes Sundays, so plan around a weekday lunch.

Dorchester — Singh's Roti Shop

Singh's Roti Shop at 554 Columbia Road is the Trinidadian counterpart on the Dorchester side, known for curried meat rotis and goat roti dinners in portions that make a second meal. It sits close to Upham's Corner and an easy ride from Roxbury.

Hyde Park — Only One Jamaican Restaurant

Only One at 1345 Hyde Park Avenue is cafeteria-style and generous, with oxtail as the headline. Weekend breakfast starts early. Parking is tight and shared with neighboring businesses, so takeout is the easier play.

How to do a Blue Hill Avenue food day

Start with Jamaican breakfast in Mattapan, walk part of Franklin Park, the 527-acre Olmsted park the parade ends in, and finish with roti for later. Franklin Park is city parkland, and Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, so it is a place to walk and look, not to consume. Most of these kitchens run on takeout and counter service, which makes them the right call for a dinner at home.

That is also the right frame for anyone 21+ who shops a licensed dispensary on the same day. Purchases stay sealed until a private residence, and edibles follow start low, go slow: a low-milligram serving and patience before any more. Verify licensed status via the Cannabis Control Commission at masscannabiscontrol.com before buying from a store you have not used. The dispensary directory lists licensed shops by neighborhood.

A few notes

  • Hours shift. Small family restaurants change hours with little notice. Check each kitchen's own page or call ahead, especially on Sundays and Mondays.
  • Takeout travels. Roti and jerk both hold up for the ride home, which is the point.
  • Carnival weekend is different. Blue Hill Avenue and Warren Street close to traffic on parade day, and parking restrictions on side streets start days earlier. Restaurants on the route get busy; order ahead.
  • Limits, if you are shopping too. Massachusetts allows adults 21+ to carry up to 2 ounces of flower, 10 grams of concentrate and 1,000 mg of THC in edibles since April 2026. The edible figure is a purchase cap, not a serving guide.
