When is Boston Carnival? On a Saturday in late August, every year. The Boston Caribbean Carnival, run by the Caribbean American Carnival Association of Boston, held its 53rd edition on Saturday, August 29, 2026, with J'ouvert at dawn in Franklin Park and the afternoon parade from Roxbury down Blue Hill Avenue. The 2027 date, the 54th carnival, is set by the association and had not been announced as of 2026. Here is how the day runs, how to plan for next August, and the rules adults 21+ should know before heading out.

The date, and how to find next year's

The carnival lands on a late-August Saturday. Recent editions show the pattern: the 50th carnival filled Franklin Park in late August 2023, and the 53rd fell on August 29, 2026. The association, known as CACAB and led for many years by president Shirley Shillingford, names the date, the grand marshal and the band lineup over the summer. The Dorchester Reporter and the Bay State Banner cover each announcement, and Boston Police publish street closures in the week before.

For planning purposes, the last two weekends of August 2027 are the ones to keep clear. Confirm the date on the association's announcement before booking anything.

How the day runs

The 2026 schedule gives the shape of a typical carnival day.

J'ouvert, early morning

J'ouvert opens the day before sunrise. In 2026 it started in the early morning on Circuit Drive inside Franklin Park, near the Shattuck Hospital campus, with police listing 6 to 10 AM, and moved toward Blue Hill Avenue, where the music shut off at the Franklin Park Zoo parking lot. J'ouvert is the paint-and-powder procession, looser than the afternoon parade and built for people willing to get messy.

The afternoon parade

The main procession gathered on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Roxbury at noon, with a 1 PM ribbon cutting led by elected officials including Mayor Michelle Wu. The masquerade bands then moved along Warren Street to Grove Hall and down Blue Hill Avenue into Franklin Park, arriving by 6 PM. The festival closed at 7 PM.

The park

Franklin Park is the destination, and the stretch of Blue Hill Avenue between Grove Hall and the park is where crowds stand deepest. The park sits between Roxbury, Dorchester and Jamaica Plain, which means three neighborhoods' worth of side streets feed into it.

Getting there

Roads close early and widely. In 2026, Circuit Drive closed to traffic and parking from late Friday night through Sunday morning, Warren Street closed between Dale Street and Blue Hill Avenue, and Blue Hill Avenue closed between Quincy Street and American Legion Highway. Parking restrictions on Talbot Avenue began Thursday afternoon. Driving in on carnival Saturday is a losing game. Plan on transit or a long walk from the edge of the closures, and check the city's closure notice the week of.

Police also stated that no sanctioned events run after 6 PM on carnival Saturday, and enforced limits on large gatherings, speaker cars and off-road vehicles in the surrounding streets.

The rule, plainly

The Cannabis Control Commission, at masscannabiscontrol.com, publishes the state rules:

  • Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces. The CCC spells it out as no smoking, vaping or eating cannabis in public places or on federal land.
  • Franklin Park, Blue Hill Avenue and the parade route are public space, as are the sidewalks and the zoo lot.
  • Adults 21+ only. Buying, possessing or using adult-use cannabis under 21 is illegal.
  • Possession. Under H.5350, adults 21+ can carry up to 2 ounces of flower, with equivalents of 10 grams of concentrate or 1,000 mg of edibles, as of 2026.
  • Cars. An open container of cannabis in a car's passenger area is illegal, and driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal.
  • State lines. Visitors from New York, Connecticut or Rhode Island cannot take Massachusetts purchases home.

What it means for your carnival day

Carnival is a parade, a neighborhood festival and a family event at once, with children on shoulders along the whole route. Shopping, if any, belongs on a different errand and a different day, because the closures make the neighborhoods around the park hard to move through. Purchases stay sealed and out of the parade. Adults 21+ buying edibles for another day should start low, go slow, and read the serving size on the label. The dispensary directory lists licensed stores across the city with current hours.

Carnival season beyond the parade

The parade is the headline, but carnival has a season around it. Masquerade bands spend the summer building costumes, and the association raises money through the warm months; in 2026 a May Duck Boat fundraiser helped fund the day. Dates for the 2027 season will be posted on the events hub as organizers announce them.

The short version

Boston Carnival happens on a late-August Saturday. The 2026 edition, the 53rd, was August 29: J'ouvert in Franklin Park at dawn, the parade from MLK Boulevard in Roxbury down Blue Hill Avenue to Franklin Park in the afternoon, and a 7 PM finish. The 2027 date will come from the Caribbean American Carnival Association of Boston. Take transit, expect closures from Thursday, and keep cannabis out of the park and off the route.
