Boston Common Tree Lighting 2026: The Date, the Nova Scotia Tree and December's Other Lightings

The Common lights Nova Scotia's tree on Thursday, December 3, 2026, a thank-you for Boston's help after the 1917 Halifax Explosion. The date, the other December lightings, and the public-space rule.

The Boston Common tree lighting is set for Thursday, December 3, 2026, from 6 to 8 PM, beside the Visitor Information Center at 139 Tremont Street. Mayor Michelle Wu, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and the Province of Nova Scotia host it, and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is scheduled to join the mayor. The tree itself is a thank-you more than a century old. For adults 21+ planning a December night downtown, here is the story behind it, the other lightings on the calendar, and the rules that come with a crowd on public land.

Why Nova Scotia sends the tree

On December 6, 1917, a munitions ship exploded in Halifax Harbor, devastating the city. Within 24 hours a train carrying supplies, doctors and emergency workers left Boston for Nova Scotia. The province has never forgotten it. For 55 years Nova Scotia has sent Boston a tree as thanks for that relief effort, according to the city, and it has become the official Christmas tree on the Common.

The city's own listing for 2026 calls the event the 84th annual lighting in one place and the 85th in another, so expect either number in coverage. The date and time are the same in both.

The tree lighting, December 3

  • When: Thursday, December 3, 2026, 6 to 8 PM
  • Where: Boston Common, next to the Visitor Information Center at 139 Tremont Street
  • Hosts: Mayor Wu, Boston Parks and Recreation, and the Province of Nova Scotia
  • Getting there: Park Street station on the Red and Green lines lets out at the corner of the Common

The crowd is large, so arrive early for a view and dress for standing still in December wind.

Commonwealth Avenue Mall, same night

Right after the Common, around 8:15 PM, the mayor joins the Friends of the Public Garden and the Committee to Light Commonwealth Avenue Mall to switch on the lights along the Comm Ave Mall in Back Bay, from Arlington Street to Charlesgate. It is a short walk west through the Public Garden, and the lit trees along the mall make a better walk than the stage does a view.

Copley Square, November 30

The Copley Square tree lighting comes first. The city lists it for Monday, November 30, 2026, starting at 5 PM at 560 Boylston Street. It is free and hosted by Boston Parks and Recreation with the Friends of Copley Square, BXP, Sasaki and the Fairmont Copley Plaza, with Santa and Rudolph on hand. It runs about an hour, making it the shorter and more family-scaled of the two big downtown lightings.

First Night, December 31

First Night Boston closes the season. The 2025 to 2026 edition was the 50th, dating to 1976, free and unticketed as it has been since 2015, with programming at 10 locations. That year's schedule ran from morning into the night, with ice sculptures on City Hall Plaza, skating shows at the Frog Pond, fireworks over Boston Common at 7 PM and a second display off Long Wharf at midnight.

The 2027 lineup had not been posted as of late October. If past years hold, expect a similar shape: City Hall Plaza as the main stage, the Common for the early fireworks, the harbor for midnight. Check firstnightboston.org for the schedule.

Nights in between

The city's December fills in around the lightings. The Frog Pond on the Common runs as a skating rink through the winter, and in the South End, SoWa lists its holiday market at the SoWa Power Station, 550 Harrison Avenue, from November 20 through December 27, 2026. Ballet, concerts and neighborhood events stack up through the month. The full list is on the events hub.

The rule, plainly

Every one of these events happens on public land. Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, and the Cannabis Control Commission (masscannabiscontrol.com) is explicit that the ban covers smoking, vaping and eating cannabis in public places and on federal land. The Common, the Public Garden, the Comm Ave Mall, Copley Square, City Hall Plaza and Long Wharf are all public spaces.

What it means for your December night

  • Licensed shops nearby. The closest licensed stores to the Common are in the Financial District: Patriot Care at 21 Milk Street, Pure Oasis at 85 Devonshire Street and Apex Noire at 150 State Street, all on the CCC's Where to Buy map as of 2026. Adults 21+ need a valid government photo ID.
  • Know the limit. As of 2026, under H.5350, the per-transaction limit is 2 ounces of flower, or its equivalent of 10 grams of concentrate or 1,000 mg of edibles.
  • Edibles. Start low, go slow. Low-milligram servings, and patience between them.
  • Carry it closed. Purchases stay sealed through a crowd and on the T. In a car, they go in the trunk or a locked glove compartment, and an open container in the passenger area is illegal.
  • Do not drive impaired. The CCC is clear that driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal, and December nights downtown mean heavy foot traffic at every crossing.
  • Staying overnight. Hotels and short-term rentals set their own rules, and most ban smoking in rooms. Check before booking.

The short version

The Boston Common tree lighting is Thursday, December 3, 2026, 6 to 8 PM, a gift from Nova Scotia that marks Boston's help after the 1917 Halifax Explosion. The Comm Ave Mall lights follow around 8:15 PM, Copley Square lights its tree on Monday, November 30, and First Night closes the year. All of it is public space, so the cannabis rule is simple: none on site. For more on Back Bay and the neighborhoods around the Common, see the Back Bay and Beacon Hill pages, and the dispensary directory for licensed stores.
