Boston's Fall and Winter Calendar, 2026 Into 2027

Boston's cold-weather calendar is unusually front-loaded with free events, which is not the city's general reputation. Between mid-October and January 1 the headline items are a rowing race, four tree lightings, and a fifty-year-old New Year's celebration that has never charged admission.

October 16–18: Head of the Charles

Three days, nearly 12,000 rowers, and roughly 225,000 spectators on both banks of the Charles. The Weeks Footbridge and the Cambridge bank near the Anderson Bridge are the classic viewing spots, and both are free.

The practical consequence: Allston, Harvard Square and the Cambridge side of the river are effectively closed to cars all weekend. Take the Red Line, walk in from Central or Harvard, and plan the rest of the day on that side.

November 20 onward: SoWa Winter Festival

The eighth annual holiday market at the SoWa Power Station runs fifteen days across four weekends in November and December, with opening night on November 20 from 4 to 9 PM. Handmade jewelry, art, and food from small South End businesses. Admission is $10, which is unusual for a holiday market and defensible given the curation.

December: four tree lightings in one week

Boston stacks its lightings almost on top of each other in the first week of December:

• The Massachusetts State House lights the Rotunda tree at 5 PM on the steps, the smallest and quietest of the four.
• The Boston Common Tree Lighting, the 84th, draws around 25,000 people to the Common beside the Visitor Information Center at 139 Tremont. It has landed on the first Thursday in December in recent years; confirm with the City before planning around it.
• Copley Square lights its tree with wreaths and red bows around the square and the Old South Church bell tolling, 5 to 6 PM.

All free. The Common ceremony is the big one and the Copley one is the pleasant one.

The Boston Pops run their holiday program at Symphony Hall through December, with matinees and a family series. Early-December weeknights are the cheapest seats of the run by a wide margin.

December 5–6: Jamaica Plain Holiday Open Studios

Jamaica Plain's artists open their studios for a December weekend, from the Brewery Complex out along Green Street. Free, self-guided, and the best low-cost gift shopping in the city. Walkable from the Orange Line at Stony Brook and Green Street.

December 31: First Night Boston 2027

Boston's New Year's Eve has run since 1976 and is entirely free with no purchase required: ice sculpture on the Common, performances across Back Bay and Copley, and midnight fireworks. It is the oldest event of its kind in the country and the one Boston institution that has never found a way to charge for itself.

Through the winter: the Frog Pond

The Boston Common Frog Pond freezes for the season from mid-November into March. Cheap admission, free for kids under a height cutoff, skate rental on site. The most central outdoor rink in the city and the least pretentious.

• 21+ only at every dispensary and for every purchase

• Massachusetts state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, which covers the Common, Copley Square, the riverbanks and every event above
• Start low, go slow with edibles, and account for standing outdoors in December
• Never drive after consuming; all of the above is better on the T anyway
